The Anuradha Saha case taken a turn

The Kolkata High Court has ordered 17 Kolkata doctors including Former West Bengal Medical Council members to stand trial for criminal conspiracy in 1988 Anuradha Saha Medical Negligence Case. Former President Dr. Ashok Chowdhury, West Bengal Medical Council will also be facing the trial. One of the three Kolkata doctors accused of medical negligence is Dr. Sukumar Mukherjee who is Chief Advisor of Health for Mamba Banerjee Government. As per the allegation, the council members conspired to shield the crime, as reported in IBN live. Comments: Every council is quasi-judicial body and should give a judgment which is not only true but also looks to be true. Once you are sitting on the post of a judge as a council member, your job is to give an honest judgment. I am not taking sides as the matter is still sub-judice but this case is an eye opener for all the council members in the country that they are a public servant who can be booked under Prevention of Corruption Act and also under IPC. .....Read More

sprritual blog Spiritual prescriptions learnt from patients

In a hospital practice, we all see sufferings all the time. When we were young in medical college, we were disturbed quite often upon seeing the sufferings of the people. During our career, we learnt a lot of spiritual prescriptions from our patients. Not only have they helped us heal our patients but also changed our perception to health and sickness.

I recall Swami Bodhanand, a disciple of Swami Chinmayananda, was once admitted ...

Doctor Day Celebration

ON the Occasion of Doctors Day a CME was organized by IMANDB, eMedinewS and Heart Care Foundation of India on 29th June 2013 at IIC, New Delhi

Constituency is more important than doctors

The Hon’ble Minister of Law and Justice, Mr. Kapil Sibbal, the Chief Guest for the Doctor’s Day, organized by Delhi Medical Council, by watch addressed function for only 15 minutes and said “I plead guilty as I have to go and work for my constituency.” It appears that for politicians, constituencies were more important than addressing a gathering of over 700 top medical professionals of the city. After all, politicians feel that intellectuals are not their voters, therefore, they can be ignored. Justice Anil Dave who was the chief guest after Mr. Kapil Sibbal left the Doctor’s Day function said that like Mother’s Day and Father’s Day, Doctor’s Day should be celebrated by every human being to than their doctors. He quoted many examples from mythology and said that the triad of Bhrama, Vishnu and Mahesh are well known to the society as Creator, Organizer and Destroyer of the people. As far as I am concerned, doctors are the 10th Incarnation of Vishnu. All doctors should understand about the 10th incarnation of Vishnu and live like ‘Vishnu’. He said we salute the doctors as they provide 24 hrs X 365 days services to the mankind. Doctors are responsible for maintaining us and to give us relief, comfort and cure.

Calcium and vitamin D boost HRT effect on hip fracture risk

According to new data from the Women's Health Initiative (WHI), postmenopausal women who took hormone replacement therapy (HRT) had a lower risk for hip fracture than women who received placebo, and they had an even lower risk if they also took calcium and vitamin D. Taking these supplements without HRT, however, did not lower the risk for hip fracture. The study, by John A. Robbins, MD, from the University of California, Davis, in Sacramento, and colleagues was published online June 26 in Menopause. (Source: Medscape)

Valvular Heart Disease Update

Functional mitral insufficiency can be inferred when the valve is morphologically normal but the left ventricle is either globally or segmentally abnormal. The color flow jet is usually central, occurring at a coaptation point that is marked by decreased contact area and displacement toward the left ventricle apex, a direction that is the opposite of prolapse.

Infertility Update (Dr Kaberi Banerjee, IVF expert, New Delhi)

What are the causes of hirsutism?

  • Polycystic ovarian syndrome or PCOS is a form of hyperandrogenism in which hormonal imbalances cause the ovaries to overproduce androgens. It is a common cause of hirsutism and is frequently associated with irregular or absent ovulation and infertility. Multiple small cysts develop in the ovaries, hence the term polycystic. These small cysts are actually immature ovarian follicles that failed to mature and ovulate. Menstrual periods may become irregular or cease due to lack of ovulation.
  • Unexplained hirsutism: Some women have hair follicles that are abnormally sensitive to androgens. Androgen levels are normal and menstrual periods occur regularly in these patients. This tendency to develop hirsutism is genetic but the cause is not known.
  • Non–classic adrenal hyperplasia: The most common abnormality of the adrenal glands that can result in hirsutism is an inherited disorder called non–classic adrenal hyperplasia (NCAH), which causes the adrenal glands to overproduce androgens. Like PCOS, NCAH is associated with irregular menstrual cycles. NCAH is a genetic disorder most commonly seen in certain ethnic groups including Ashkenazi Jews, Eskimos, and French–Canadians. Elevation of the hormone 17a–hydroxyprogesterone is characteristic of NCAH.
  • HAIR–AN syndrome (Hyperandrogenism, Insulin Resistance, Acanthosis Nigricans): Some women are born with insulin resistance, a severe defect in the ability of insulin to control blood sugar levels. To compensate, the pancreas produce ovulation. Insulin resistance may lead to diabetes mellitus, high blood pressure, heart disease, and excessive growth and darkening of the skin (acanthosis nigricans), which generally occurs around the neck and crease areas of the skin.

Rabies Update (Dr. A K Gupta)

What is “paralytic form” of rabies in animals?

Paralytic or dumb rabies refers to animals in which the behavioral changes are minimal or absent and the disease is manifested mainly by paralysis. This is first manifested by paralysis of the throat and masseter muscles, often with profuse salivation and inability to swallow. Dropping of lower jaw is common in dogs. The animals are not vicious and rarely attempt to bite. The paralysis progresses rapidly to all parts of the body leading to coma and death follows in a few hours.
