"Main Hoon Na": Always be there for your patient

When a patient comes to a doctor, he does so with the hope that the doctor would help cure his illness and with a belief that the doctor would listen to his complaints without being judgmental or critical. He is going through a gamut of emotions – he is apprehensive, he is anxious and may become frustrated at times, if he has a long-standing illness.

Communication is not just about expressing our thoughts and ideas. To be a good listener is as important. The benefits of listening for a doctor are tremendous. This is especially true regarding a doctor-patient relationship. A good patient history gives clues and sets the course for investigations and treatment.

Listen to what the patient has to say about his illness, his concerns and then respond accordingly. Don’t be judgmental or critical if the patient slips up at times.  Stay calm and patiently explain to him the necessity of compliance to treatment prescribed. This way the patient is reassured and will be more inclined to follow your instructions; he will come back to you instead of seeking a second opinion.
