Flu fighting foods

Beyond the flu shot, and avoiding physical contact like handshakes one can also build up the immune system with foods.

  • Proteins like lean meat, poultry, seafood, eggs, beans and soy products can boost immunity.
  • Vitamin A protects from infections and is present in colorful carrots, kale, spinach, sweet potatoes, and red bell peppers.
  • Vitamin C boosts immunity and is present in citrus fruits.
  • Vitamin E in nuts works as an antioxidant neutralizing free radicals. Throw in some almonds or sunflower seeds for a little healthy Zinc. Other sources are lean beef, crab, black eye peas and tofu! (Source Medline Plus)

News Around The Globe

  • Rheumatologists need to be aware of possible Chikungunya virus diagnoses in patients who present with widespread joint pain, say experts at the American College of Rheumatology 2014 Annual Meeting.
  • About one in five people with type 2 diabetes do not respond favorably to exercise, suggests a new literature review. The data suggest that about 15% to 20% of patients with type 2 diabetes will not experience improvements in HbA1c, insulin sensitivity, percent body fat, or muscle mitochondrial content even with supervised exercise. The data were published online November 20 in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism.
  • The Alzheimer's disease (AD) drug memantine, a medication that blocks N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptors, may also decrease binge eating behaviors, points preliminary research published online in Neuropsychopharmacology.
  • Rates of incidence of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) are significantly increased in people with asthma or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), suggest the findings of a population-based study published online November 19 in the European Respiratory Journal.
  • A new study supports a link between low levels of vitamin D and increased risk for cognitive decline. Researchers noted that in a group of cognitively intact older adults, serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25OHD) levels below 75 nmol/L at the outset predicted cognitive decline over the next 4 years, independent of other factors. The study was published online in Neurology.

Think positive and think different

The Mantra to acquire spiritual health is to think positive and differently. When you think positive, it creates positive hormones and takes you from sympathetic mode to parasympathetic mode. When you think different, it gives you opportunities and from multiple options available, you can ask your heart to choose one of them.

Thinking positive was a message given by Lord Buddha and thinking different by Adi Shankaracharya.

The candle light march which was done for fighting justice in Jessica Lal murder case has been picked up by most of the protest campaigns because it was positive and different.

I have seen three examples in my life where I used this and prolonged the life of those persons. My grandfather-in-law at the age of 85 thought it was time to go but when we made him work positively and differently, he die at the age of 100 years. He was asked to teach youngsters law, write everyday to the Prime Minister on certain issues and find matrimonial matches for the youngest persons in the family.

In other two cases, one was suffering from terminal prostate cancer and the other terminal brain cancer. The first one lived for ten years and the other is still alive.

Both were told that they had a very early cancer and that was cured by a surgery.

When you think different, it creates creativity and when it is with positive attitude, it is accepted by all.

Inspirational Story

Shake It Off and Step Up

A parable is told of a farmer who owned an old mule. The mule fell into the farmer's well. The farmer heard the mule 'braying' - or whatever mules do when they fall into wells. After carefully assessing the situation, the farmer felt sorry for the mule, but decided that neither the mule nor the well was worth saving. Instead, he called his neighbors together and told them what had happened and asked them to help haul dirt to bury the old mule in the well and put him out of his misery.

Initially, the old mule was hysterical! But as the farmer and his neighbors continued shoveling and the dirt hit his back, a thought struck him. It suddenly dawned on him that every time a shovel load of dirt landed on his back: he should shake it off and step up! This is what the old mule did, blow after blow.

"Shake it off and step up... shake it off and step up... shake it off and step up!" he repeated to encourage himself. No matter how painful the blows, or distressing the situation seemed, the old mule fought "panic" and just kept right on shaking it off and stepping up!

You guessed it! It wasn't long before the old mule, battered and exhausted, stepped triumphantly over the wall of that well! What seemed like it would bury him, actually end up blessing him. All because of the manner in which he handled his adversity.

In addition to "shaking it off and step up," we Christians have our heavenly Father to help get us through rough times. When the going gets rough, keep looking up, and trust him.

  • Supplemental oxygen routinely given to acute myocardial infarction (MI) patients from the ambulance through to the recovery room might actually be hurting their hearts. Infarct size estimated by creatinine kinase levels was greater with oxygen than with none for patients with normal oxygen saturation (ratio of geometric mean peaks 1.26, P=0.01), Dion Stub, MBBS, PhD, of the Baker IDI Heart and Diabetes Institute in Melbourne, Australia, and colleagues found. Infarct size measured by the more accurate cardiac MRI in a subset of patients after 6 months showed the same pattern (median 20.3 versus 13.1 g,P=0.04). The findings of their research were presented at the American Heart Association meeting (MedPage).
  • Twenty-year follow-up of the West of Scotland Coronary Prevention Study (WOSCOPS) has shown that treatment with a statin for 5 years provides a persistent reduction in cardiovascular disease outcomes over the course of 2 decades. The data were presented at the American Heart Association (AHA) 2014 Scientific Sessions.

Mr. Smith is Dead

A law firm receptionist answered the phone the morning after the firm's senior partner had passed away unexpectedly.

"Is Mr. Smith there?" asked the client on the phone.

"I'm very sorry, but Mr. Smith passed away last night," the receptionist answered.

"Is Mr. Smith there?" repeated the client.

The receptionist was perplexed. "Perhaps you didn't understand me I'm afraid Mr. Smith passed away last night."

"Is Mr. Smith there?" asked the client again.

"Ma'am, do you understand what I'm saying?" said the exasperated receptionist. "Mr. Smith is DEAD!"

"I understand you perfectly," the client sighed. "I just can't hear it often enough."

Q. My hospital sometimes advertises in the newspapers inviting philanthropists to help poor patients who do not have money to pay for costly surgery etc. When the donors, including MLAs, come to the hospital for the charity, they bring with them local press and media people for publicity. This sometimes affects the normal functioning of the hospital. Are any hospital ethics being violated? What are your comments?

A. My comments are as follows:

  • Your hospital is doing a good service. No hospital ethics are being violated.
  • The media and press coverage might cause some disturbance in the hospital but that is for a good cause. Moreover, the hospital gets free publicity. This may be good for the hospital.
