 New revised guidelines on fibromyalgia
The European League Against Rheumatism (EULAR) has released revised guidelines for the management of patients with fibromyalgia. These guidelines published online first July 4, 2016 in the Annals of Rheumatic Diseases have incorporated evidence-based recommendations in relation to pharmacological and non-pharmacological interventions, including complementary, and alternative medicines/therapies.

A multidisciplinary working group, which included 18 members from 12 European countries, evaluated data from 107 systematic reviews and/or meta-analyses.

The only 'strong for' therapy-based recommendation in the guidelines was exercise.

The guidelines recommend that initial management should involve patient education and focus on non-pharmacological therapies. If there is no response, then further therapies (all of which were evaluated as ‘weak for’ based on meta-analyses) should be tailored to the specific needs of the individual and may involve psychological therapies (for mood disorders and unhelpful coping strategies), pharmacotherapy (for severe pain or sleep disturbance) and/or a multimodal rehabilitation program (for severe disability).
