The CPR 10 Mantra is – “within 10 minutes of death, earlier the better; at least for the next 10 minutes, longer the better; compress the centre of the chest of the dead person continuously and effectively with a speed of 10x10 i.e. 100 per minute.”

When will the Dr. B.C. Roy National Awards recommence?

The present Government and the Health Ministry along with the Board of Governors, Medical Council of India has been sitting on the Dr. B.C. Roy National Award file for the last 5 years.

The last awards were given on 1st July, 2008 by the then President Smt. Pratibha Singh Patil.

  • For the medical fraternity, Dr. B.C. Roy National Awards are the highest award, which a doctor can aspire for. Each year, 15 to 20 awards were distributed. But, for reasons unknown to the medical fraternity, the Government and MCI are sitting on the file. I have personally filed an RTI application in both MCI and Health Ministry but with no response.
  • It appears that the present Government is not medical fraternity friendly. No further Dr. B.C. Roy National Awards have been given since 2008. The Government is thinking of allowing AYUSH doctors to register under Allopathic Medical Register. The Clinical Establishment (Registration and Regulation) Act 2010 was passed by the Parliament without taking the medical fraternity into confidence.

Valvular Heart Disease Update

What are the most common causes of significant mitral regurgitation in the elderly?

The causes are mitral valve prolapse and ischemic heart disease.

Surgery for severe chronic mitral regurgitation is recommended for young asymptomatic patients with early evidence of left ventricular dysfunction but the same is not indicated in patients over age 80 to proceed with surgery unless symptomatic.

Infertility Update (Dr Kaberi Banerjee, IVF expert, New Delhi)

What percentage of IVF cycles get cancelled prior to egg retrieval and why?

According to western figures 20% of cycles may be cancelled prior to egg retrieval. IVF cycles may be cancelled for a variety of reasons, usually due to an inadequate number of follicles developing. Cancellation rates due to low response to the ovulation drugs increase with a woman’s age, especially after age 35. A cycle may be cancelled to reduce the risk of ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS). Treatment with a GnRH agonist or antagonist reduces the possibility of premature LH surges from the pituitary gland, and thereby reduces the risk of premature ovulation.

Rabies Update (Dr. A K Gupta)

What should be done to a pet dog that is bitten by a stray dog?

If a pet dog is bitten by a stray dog, wounds should be thoroughly washed and povidone iodine should be applied. Consult a veterinarian for anti-rabies vaccination.

An Inspirational Story

Attitude – One of Life’s Choice

My wife, Tere, and I purchased a new car in December. Even though we had tickets to fly from California to Houston to visit her family for Christmas, we decided to drive to Texas to break in the new car. We packed the car and took off for a wonderful week with Grandma.

We had a wonderful time and stay to the last possible minute visiting with Grandma. On the return trip we needed to get home in a hurry, so we drove straight through — one person driving while the other one slept. After driving in a hard rain for several hours, we arrived home late at night. We were tired and ready for a hot shower and a soft bed. I had the feeling that no matter how tired we were, we should unpack the car that night, but all Tere wanted was the hot shower and soft bed, so we decided to wait and unload the car in the morning. ............Read More
